I am currently beginning my 8th year of teaching. I spent 4 years teaching 5th grade and this is my 4th year teaching 2nd. I wanted to be a teacher since I was in second grade and was inspired by my second grade teacher, Mrs. Phillips. I knew I wanted to teach 2nd grade, but was offered my first job as a fifth grade teacher and, of course, accepted. Teaching fifth grade taught me a lot about what students need to know when they get older which, in turn, better prepared me as a second grade teacher.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 2001 from Wittenberg University with an emphasis in science education and a minor in music. I loved Wittenberg so much that I went back and earned my Master of Arts degree in Education in 2005. I hope to one day return to Wittenberg and teach students who want to become teachers.
Learning is extremely important to me so I am always searching for new ideas to use in my classroom. I have received 3 educational grants which have enabled me to implement some of my ideas. In 2004, I received a MAC grant and an Action Based Research Grant for creating a "hands-on" science curriculum. In 2007, I received the Martha Holden Jennings Grant for creating a research based reading curriculum. I am currently using my research based reading curriculum to teach comprehension strategies.
I hope you've learned enough about me and feel confident that I will provide your child with the best possible education. I am looking forward to a great school year!
